Cold and Heated Shoulder Wrap

This shoulder warming brace is designed to contour to one’s shoulder, and includes pockets that hold gel packs to provide benefits of either cold or hot therapy.

The hot shoulder wrap includes two reusable gel packs that can either be frozen or microwaved. One can purchase an extra pair of the gel packs as a backup set while one is waiting for the packs to freeze, for instance.

These gel packs are held in place by pockets with Velcro closures, so one does not need to worry about the ice or heat pack slipping out of position.

The shoulder ice wrap itself is constructed of foam laminate that is both soft and breathable. It, too, can be secured and adjusted via simple contact closures. There is one closure at the upper arm as well as one in the shoulder area for a customized fit.

The neck portion of the heat therapy shoulder support loops across the chest, beneath the uninjured arm, and back to the painful shoulder area. This design helps balance the support across the body.

The cold-therapy shoulder brace comes in one universal size, simplifying the process of selecting such an orthotic for shoulder muscle pain treatment.

The ice or heat therapy this shoulder wrap provides can be helpful in treating a number of conditions and/or in a number of situations (see more orthotics for shoulder injury treatment), including but not limited to:

  • Arthritis
  • Post-operative care
  • As part of physical therapy or rehab program
  • After a strenuous upper body workout
  • Rotator cuff injury
  • Dislocated shoulder
  • Separated shoulder
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
  • Tendonitis or other tendon problems

Treatment of a number of these conditions will also likely involve a period of shoulder immobilization. Check out BraceAbility’s selection of shoulder immobilizers and arm slings.

Shoulder Warming Brace vs. Shoulder Ice Wrap

Heat and ice therapy are often paired together as they complement each other and can be interchanged via gel packs. While they may be applied in the same manner, they do not provide the same benefits.

In situations where heat therapy is beneficial, ice can actually worsen the injury, and vice versa. This is why it’s vital to know the difference between the benefits of ice and heat therapy.

Generally speaking, ice is for injuries, while heat is for muscle repair. More specifically, ice helps reduce painful inflammation with which the body responds to injury. Heat therapy can help ease pain caused by muscle spasms or trigger points. It can also help with psychological stress that is often tied into bodily discomfort.

Cold can actually make muscle spasms or the discomfort associated with trigger points worse. On the other hand, heat applied to a fresh injury can heighten inflammation. Therefore, it is important to follow medical instructions and to have an accurate idea of just what is causing shoulder pain before applying an ice or heat pack to a painful area.

In some cases, both heat and ice are appropriate. For instance, if one has injured the muscles of his or her shoulder, ice may be one’s initial mode of treatment. But once the inflammation has subsided, one can switch to heat therapy. The dual use of the ice packs is an added benefit of this cryotherapy/thermotherapy wrap.
