Plantar Fasciitis Orthotics & Supports
Getting out of bed in the morning is a tough enough task without having to worry about pain shooting through your heel when your foot hits the floor—a sensation that will likely be repeated later in the day.
There is no need to suffer from heel pain caused by the repetitive stress injury plantar fasciitis. It can and should be treated so that it does not progress into something more debilitating.
Plantar fasciitis is an injury to the plantar fascia, which is the band of tissue that connects the bones of your heel to those of your toes. When this tissue is healthy, it works like a bow string, absorbing shock to the feet and supporting the arch of the heel, according to the Mayo Clinic.
But this ligament can only handle so much stress or stretching. When that load becomes too much, tiny tears will form in the plantar fascia and the area will become inflamed. This causes the stab of pain in the heel.
Plantar fasciitis can be brought on by athletic activities that put a lot of stress on the heel, such as ballet or distance running, long days on the feet, unsupportive shoes (For more, see “Slideshow: The Worst Shoes for Your Feet”), abnormally high or low arches or obesity, to name a few. (See “What is Plantar Fasciitis?” in the Resource Library for a more complete explanation of plantar fasciitis causes and practices aimed at prevention.)
Treating Plantar Fasciitis
Considering that many of the aforementioned conditions cannot be avoided, it is a comforting that plantar fasciitis can usually be treated without surgery. Thankfully, the medical community has produced a number of plantar fasciitis orthotics to ease pain and inflammation and get you on the mend in a speedy fashion. And the BraceAbility community can help you get them at a price that’s easier on your wallet.
Plantar Fasciitis Splint & Brace Supports
A go-to method for treating heel pain is a plantar fasciitis night splint. These splints hold the foot in a position that gently stretches the plantar fascia and the calf muscles while you sleep. BraceAbility offers a number of plantar fasciitis night splints from reputable brands like Corflex, Bauerfeind and Active Innovations.
As an example, consider the popular Active Innovations Dorsal Night Splint. This plantar fasciitis brace is lightweight and cool, which makes it the user more comfortable wearing it for extended periods of time, thereby speeding the healing process while easing pain.
It can be worn on either foot and features an anti-slip pad at the bottom of the brace so you can safely move about if needed during the night. Further, the plantar fasciitis brace can be slid on and off like a slipper once it has been adjusted to your foot.
Plantar Fasciitis Boot
For the daylight hours, one might find a plantar fasciitis boot or shoe helpful. Bauerfeind has designed a shoe specifically designed for treating heel pain. Its GloboPed heel relief shoe features a cut out area for the heel area and in its sole to prevent the heel from coming in contact with any surface that would cause pain in the heel.
Also illustrative of its user-comfort design, the planar fasciitis shoe is easy to move about in and features no stitching to irritate the foot.
Sleeker Options: The Plantar Fasciitis Sock and Insoles
If a brace or boot is not for you, shoe inserts for plantar fasciitis can be a less bulky substitute or supplement for relieve the pressure and pain in the heel. At BraceAbility, you can find plantar fasciitis insoles that support the entire foot or plantar fasciitis inserts just for the heel.
You can also find a variety of compression socks on the site that can help ease pressure on the heel and encourage more blood flow to the foot, speeding the heeling process (see “Owner’s Manual: Do Compression Socks Work?”). And I do mean socks—plural. We offer a variety of plantar fasciitis sock styles, including:
- dress socks
- diabetic socks
- hiking socks
- above-ankle athletic socks
- below-ankle athletic socks
