What Is Osgood-Schlatter Disease, and How Can Knee Braces for Children Help?

Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) afflicts a lot of children worldwide. So what is OSD, you may ask? To put it simply, OSD is the inflammation of the bone, cartilage, and/or tendon at the top of the tibia or shinbone, where the tendon from the patella or kneecap attaches. Although both knees can be affected by this disease,  only one knee is commonly affected. This disease is one of the most frequent causes of knee pain in active children and young athletes, most especially around the beginning of growth spurts. These growth spurts usually occur at any time between the ages of eight and thirteen (for girls) or between ten and fifteen (for boys).

OSD, contrary to popular belief, isn't really that serious a condition and is actually an overuse injury. However, teens increase the risk of acquiring OSD through playing sports that involve a lot of running, jumping, and twisting, such as volleyball, basketball, football, tennis,  gymnastics, soccer, etc. And while doctors are often in disagreement about what causes OSD, they usually agree that overuse and physical stress are involved.

Symptoms of OSD may include any or all of the following: extreme pain that worsens with physical activity or exercise, relief from pain while resting, swelling or tenderness under the knee and over the shinbone, limping after physical activity or exercise, and tightness of the hamstring and quadriceps muscles surrounding the knee.

Pediatric knee braces or pediatric knee immobilizers can help treat OSD by helping reduce pain in the afflicted area. These knee braces for kids help provide compression and support to the knee in general and helps support the patella tendon.
